Welcome to the Department of Chemistry rated first for research in New Zealand

Chemistry is the Central Science. Chemistry is the study of matter: its structure, its properties and reactions that transform it. Chemistry is the fundamental science of life, and underpins a range of other sciences: Biology, medicine, biochemistry, environmental science, geology and forensic science. Chemistry is paramount to improving the quality of life. Chemistry keeps us fed and keeps us healthy. Chemistry is about providing solutions for the today's problems: Ozone depletion, man-made global warming, environmental damage, pollution, disease. Chemistry is paramount to wealth creation and improving quality of life, whilst maintaining a healthy environment.

The internationally renowned Department of Chemistry at The University of Waikato is at the forefront of chemistry research in New Zealand. We were rated number 1 in the most recent Performance Based Research Fund assessment.

Why Study Chemistry at the University of Waikato?

We provide a top quality education in chemistry for undergraduate and masters students, and a first rate doctoral training. An understanding of chemical principles is critically important, not only in chemistry, but also in all branches of science and for a wide range of industries.

At the interface between Chemistry and other sciences lie Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Forensic Science, Industrial Chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Biochemistry. These are major growth areas in modern science for both academia and industry.

Studying Chemistry develops problem solving skills, logical thinking and analytical ability. It also ensures that you are familiar with handling information, be it numerical, oral, written or graphical, and in dealing with complex ideas. These attributes are desirable to many employers both within and outside science. Consequently our chemistry graduates are in strong demand in the workplace.
